Belgrade sightseeing tours – The Republic square is on the place where used to stand the Stambol gate (demolished in 1866) and was built after the construction of the National theatre (1869). The Stambol gate – built by the Austrians at the beginning of the 8th century, was between the monument to Prince Mihailo Obrenovic and National Theatre.
It was the largest and the most beautiful gate that adorned the center of Belgrade – through it passed the road to IStanbul, the “Via militaris” after which it got the name. In our city the STambol gate was remembered for executions that Turks conducted – the impalements.
After the establishment of the Serbian government and demolition of the Stambol gate, the space of Republic square remained unused for a long time – Belgrade landmark National Theatre was the only high building on that surface. When in 1882 rose the monument to prince Mihailo, this site became increasingly popular sightseeing destination, so the construction started soon after.
Belgrade sightseeing tours – On the place of the National museum was a long low building, where was the famous Belgrade tavern “Dardaneli” epicentre of the art world and prominent Belgrade residents of that age. This building was demolished in 1903, first to build the Management of Funds – which is the National museum today.
At the beginning of Knez Mihailova Street is the central square of Belgrade – the Republic Square, considered to be the epicentre of the old town and the starting point of all Belgrade sightseeing tours. In the centre of the square is the famous statue “Kod Konja” (The Horse) representing the Serbian liberator prince Mihailo Obrenovic at the time Belgrade gained independence from Turks. In front of the monument is the famous National Theatre, and on its left is the National Museum. For centuries now it is known as the gathering point of the younger population before going out.
