Monuments of Belgrade – “Pobednik” is a piece of Ivan Mestrovic and is on the plateau of Kalemegdan. It may well be called a symbol of Belgrade, as it can be seen from every important city spots. It was officially revealed in 1928 on the ocassion of the 10th anniversary from the breach of the Salonika front.

 “Pobednik” is made in bronze and in tame got the specific greenish colour. It is a 14 meter high figure of a nude man who is holding a sword in one hand and a pigeon in the other. The figure itself is on a stone pedestal and pedestal on a stone pillar.

Monuments in BElgrade – “Pobednik” symbolizes freedom from 5 centuries of slavery under Turks as well as the breach of the Salonika Front in the WW 1.

Curious fact: Originally, the monument was intended to be at Terazije, as a symbol of Serbian victory in the first Balkan war. Back at 1912 Ivan MEstrovic designed a fountain in which center would be a five-stage pillar on which would be the “Pobednik”. After WW1 this idea was cancelled so the monument is in its current location.

Monuments of Belgrade – Ivan Mestrovic made this monumental piece in a gym of a primary school in what is today Kralja Petra 1 Street. Before WW 1 started, the figure was shipped to Austro-Hungary, in Czechoslovakia more specifically, for casting.

It is exactly where the monument was during the war, which saved it from destruction. This Belgrade landmark can easily be the most photographed one, and is visited by thousands of tourists on a daily basis.
