Belgrade squares – Terazije Square – central square in Belgrade

Belgrade squares – Terazije Square is city area between Sremska and Kralja Milana Streets. Its length is 450 meters and is wide between 15 and 40 meters. It is one of the most famous Belgrade squares – its foundation dates in the mid of 19th century, when knez Milos Obrenovic oreder to tradespeople to move from where they were mixed with Turks and settle on this area.

His idea was: Whoever agrees to hedge a lot – gets it for free. Terazije was even then, as it is now center of social life and entertainment, Terazije Theatre is a proof.  Belgrade Squares – In Terazije is also hotel “Moscow” and palace “Albania” which have been meeting points for many many yeats. In 2012 in New Belgrade was built a replica of Terazije from the 30’s from the previous century.

Belgrade squares – On Terazije you can find the famous palace “Albania” the first sky scrapper in Belgrade. This palace was started based on a project of Brako Bono and Milan Grakalic from 1938 but it was finished by the ideas of Miladin Prljevic and Djordje Lazarevic in 1939.

The palace has 13 floors with 4 underground levels, and in the first half of 20th century was the highest building in Southern Europe. It was named after a kafana (tavern) built in 1860 which was on the place where the palace was built.
