Parks in Belgrade – Near Belgrade’s main pedestrian zone is one of the oldest and most famous city parks of Belgrade – the Students’ Park. It is in the oldest part of the city, between Vase Carapica and Uzun-Mirkova Streets.

Space on which this park lies was often repurposed in the past. Parks in Belgrade – During the Turkish reign here was the Turkish graveyard, and in 1824 on this spot was opened the Grand Belgrade market. It was a very live place with Turkish stores from both sides of the street Vase Carapica. The market was removed in 1927 and this whole space was turned into a park.

Parks in Belgrade- Students’ Park today is one of the most famous environmental landmarks of Belgrade with several important objects surrounding it. Most important is Captain Miša’s Mansion, one of the most representative Belgrade palaces.

This mansion was built from 1857 to 1863 as one of the richest and tallest buildings in Belgrade. It was named after its constructor, Captain Misa Anastasijevic, one of the wealthiest Serbs of that time, famous salt merchant and ship owner.

Captain Misa Anastasijevic dedicated this palace to be the court of would-be royal couple of Serbia, his daughter Sara and Djordje Karadjordjevic. However, since the Karadjordjevic dynasty was overthrown in 1858, the idea of marriage was lost and that is why Captain Misa decided to leave the palace to its motherland, to be used by cultural and educational institutions.

Today, here is Rector’s Office, University of Belgrade. Parks of Belgrade – Among other buildings we should mention the building of the Faculty of Philology, constructed in post-academic style in 1922, reconstructed after demolition in WW 2. Building of Ethnographic Museum was built in 1934 as headquarters of Belgrade stock market, while the Kolarac building was finished in 1931.

Parks of Belgrade – Students’ Park in the middle of the square contributes to tourist value of this landmark. First shapes of the park were given at the end of 19th century and was completely finished in ’30s of 20th century.

Park has monuments dedicated to three great names of Serbian culture and science. The oldest one was placed in 1897 dedicated to Josif Pancic – Serbian doctor, botanist and first president of the Serbian Royal Academy.

In 1930, monument dedicated to Dositej Obradovic – first minister of education and Serbian enlightener, was moved here from Kalemegdan and the third monument is to the famous Serbian geographer – Jovan Cvijic.
