Squares in Belgrade 

Squares in Belgrade – Slavija Square is an important crossroad in Belgrade – between streets Kralja Milana, Beogradska, Makenzijeva, Svetosavska, Bulevar Oslobodjenja and Nemanjina.  Earlier, this Square was named after the famous socialist Dimitrije Tucovic.  Municipalities Vracar and Savski Venac intersect at Slavija.

Squares in Belgrade – Entire area where Slavija is today, during 80’s in 19th century was a pond where Belgrade residents hunted wild ducks. The beginnings of Slavija are tied to a name Francis Makenzy, well known Scotsman merchant who bought a large estate and built a house right above where Slavija is now.

Later on, on the place of his house was built a cinema “Slavija” which was destroyed oin 1990’s. During those years at the Square were famus taverns “Three pesants” and “Rudnicanin”. After WW2 in 1947 and change of political system in Yugoslavia, Slavia got new name as well – Square of DImitrije Tucovic.

In the central part is a monument of Dimitrije Tucovic, made by a famous Serbian sculptor Stevan Bodnarov. Squares in Belgrade – Those years many buildings were constructed: “Slavija” hotel in 1962, then the 1st McDonalds in entire Eastern Europe in 1989. Old name was given back at the beginning of this century. At the square is the building of the National Bank of Serbia –  its construction started during 90’s in the previous century and was completed in 2006.

Squares in Belgrade – Slavija Square is one of the most frequent locations in Belgrade. All means of transportation go across this square: trams, buses and trolley. Squares in Belgrade – Students’ Square and Terazije lost their use as squares and eventually became streets, whil Floral Square completely lost its function of road. Accordimg to that, Slavija and the Republic Square remain the last true squares in the city center.
