Historic monuments

Historic monuments – One more beautiful site in Kalemegdan is in the Lower Town – the Nebojsa Tower. The tower is named after a negative of a verb “to be scared” (srb bojati se) but it was erroneously remembered as the tower of Nebojsa.

The tower has octagonal shape and with its four floors and 22 m height leaves visitors in awe. Cannon holes on each side bring us back in ages when the tower was a watchtower and bastion of the motherland. The Tower is open for visitors every day (except Monday) 10h to 20h (June to August) and 10h to 18h (September to May).

The tower was built round 1460s and its first role was defence from Turkish conquerors. Centuries later it lost its defensive role and it was turned into dungeon (18. and 19. century) During the Turkish siege of Belgrade in 1521 the city endured the attacks for a great deal of time and after the Turks seized Belgrade, the Tower was reconstructed at the orders of the sultan Suleiman.

Then it was called the White tower, and was also mentioned as the Timiosara Tower later on. The name it has today is from the 18th century as a memory of a tower from the court of despot Stefan Lazarevic, which was destroyed in 1690.

Historic monuments – During the Austrian occupation of Belgrade in 18th century (1717 to 1737) the tower was renovated once again and after the Austrians left Belgrade, the Turks used it as a dungeon. In the tower was murdered Rigas Feraios – a Greek revolutionist, and Jevrem Obrenovic, brother of Milos Obrenovic was held captive here.

Historic monuments are important element of turist offer in Belgrade. Importance of Nebojsa Tower is not only in terms of tourism in Belgrade but its historic importance gave it a brand new shine in 2011.
