National Theatre – Centre of cultural events

National Theatre – Centre of cultural events of every city is deffinitely its national theatre.  National Theatre is one of the Belgrade landmarks established in 1868. Back then, Serbia had slightly over 1.2 million residents and Belgrade had round 25 thousands.

Event then, there was a great need for culture, education and science. After several attempts to establish a professional theatre in Belgrade, some of which date in 1842, but the first play “Djuradj Brankovic” by Karol Obernjak was performed November 22, 1868. The play was performed at the guest house “Kod engleske kraljice” (At the Queen of England), which was a temporary home for the National theatre the following year.

When the Theatre building was built, asides from Captain Misa residence it was the biggest and luxurious palace in Serbia. First improvements of this monumental building were made in 1870 since relatively small stage required to be extended.

Issues with stage and auxiliary facilities, weak construction due to cutting expenses etc. were the cause of decision to reconstruct in 1911. The works started in 1912, but were ended in 1922 due to WW1. National Theatre got damaged during bombing of Belgrade on April 6 1941 but even under German occupation – the same year started its reconstruction.

Asides from turbulent history and many difficulties it came across during its existence, National theatre survived and represents one of Belgrade Landmarks. This landmark is in the very heart of the city – on the Republic Square.
