Culture in Belgrade – National Museum is in the very center of Belgrade on the Republic Square. It is the oldest museum in Serbia, established by the order of the then Minister of Education Jovan Sterija Popovic in 1844 as the “Serbian Museum”.
Museum is in the current building since 1952, it was moved after WW2. Museum is complex and holds over 400.000 archaeological, cultural and historic objects of immeasurable value. There are many archaeological, historic, numismatic objects, many pieces of applied art, artistic accomplishments, many old and rare books etc. The museum also has a remarkable archive of documentary material.
Culture in Belgrade – Visitors will enjoy exhibits of Neolithic culture of Vinca and Lepenski Vir, rich collection from Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine period. One of the most valuable pieces of this Museum is Miroslav’s Gospel – the oldest and most important Cyrillic document from 12th century.
Culture in Belgrade – Interesting exhibition in museum is also the Belgrade mummy, from Old Egypt which was donated to the National museum in 1888. Painting lovers will enjoy in over 1.500 remarkable pieces of national painters from 18th, 19th and 20th century such are Djura Jaksic, Paja Jovanovic, Djordje Krstic, Uros Predic and many more.
Asides from national painters, there are valuable collections of Italian, Austrian, French, Russian and many other artists – Van Gogh, Mondrian, Ruebens, Monet, Dego, Matisse and Picasso.
Culture in Belgrade – The National Museum is consisted of the Museum of Vuk and Dositej, Fresco Gallery, Memorial Museum of Nadezda and Rastko Petrovic, as well as the Archaeological Museum of Djerdap in Kladovo.
