Belgrade museums – Memorial Museum of Vuk Karadzic and Dositej Obradovic is dedicated to two great figures of Serbian culture in 19th century. It was established in 1949 in one of the eldest parts of Belgrade, in Gospodar Jevremova 21 Street.
Museum is in a convenient building – there used to be a University (1808-1813) established by Dositej Obradovic, and one of the first students was Vuk Karadzic. This building and Bajrakli Mosque and Sheikh Mustafa’s Turbes is an environmental witness of Turkish culture in Serbian Capital.
Belgrade museums – Building where museum is placed is a historic monument from 18th century. It was constructed as a residential object in a typical Balkan style (both exterior and interior). Building is protected as a cultural heritage of great importance for the Republic of Serbia.
Belgrade Museums – Museum has a extensive collection devoted to Vuk Karadzic, reformer and creator of Serbian language, as well as to Dositej Obradovic, Serbian enlightener, the first Minister of Education and one of the most prominent Serbs of his time, who left an invaluable imprint on Serbian culture. Ground floor is the part dedicated to Dositej Obradovic and on the first floor is the part of Vuk Karadzic.
Daughter of Vuk Karadzic, Mina Vukomanovic, at the end of 19th century doanted to the Kingdom of Serbia a wealthy personal collection of her father’s work, which was in the National Museum up to the establishment of this museum. A part of Vuk’s legacy was destroyed in WW 1- However, museum doesn’t own any personal legacy of Dositej, because it was destroyed in a fire in 1813 and that is why his collection is more modest and is mostly consisted out of materials from archive, first editions of some of his works and Dositej’s correspondence.
Museum is open every day, except Monday, and on Sunday entrance is free.
