House of the National Assembly of Serbia

House of the National Assembly of Serbia – the House of the National Assembly of Serbia is near the Tasmajdan Park, where in 1830 was officially read the sultan’s edict which gave Serbia its autonomy.

It was built for a long period and many architects participated in its construction. The first design for the House of the National Assembly was in 1892 by Konstantin Jovanovic but the construction based on his design was postponed.

In 1901 at the competition for a new project for the House won Jovan Ilikic and the construction started in 1907 Ilikic died during WW 1 in a concentration camp so the construction works were in the hands of his son Pavle, and then of Nikola Krasnov – who greatly contributed to interior design. House of the National Assembly was completed in 1936.

The building has the spirit of academic traditionalism, and interior decoration was done by the most famous Serbian artists. At the main entrance are famous sculptures “Igrali se konji vrani” (eng: “Play of Black Horses”) by Toma Rosandic.

During WW 2 this object was headquarters of the German occupation command and because of it it was saved from demolition unlike many other Belgrade landmarks. After the war ended November 29, 1945 in the House was declared the Republic and here was the residency of: Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. From July 3 2006 House is residency of the National Assembly of Serbia.
