Church of St. Petka and Ruzica church – Church of the Theotokos, known as Ruzica church, is the oldest Belgrade church, but the exact time of its construction has not been established. It is not known who the builders or benefactor were, fact that contributes to the mystique of this building. It was destroyed at the late 17th century only to be rebuilt nine months later.
Ruzica church is located in the walls of Belgrade Fortress – Kalemegdan, under the Prison Gate. During the 18th century the church was used as a gunpowder warehouse, and during one period during the 19th century was turned into a military church. It was demolished again during WW 1 and a plate in front of it speaks of this horrific event.
Church of St. Petka and Ruzica church – The church is a cultural monument of high importance. In frame of the Church Ruzica there is a Chapel of St. Petka – the two of these buildings make an important ecclesiastical complex of Belgrade. It is one of the 10 most unique churches in the world, among temples from Japan, Russia, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Columbia, Ukraine and France.
Chapel of St. Petka is near the Ruzica Church in the Lower Town of Kalemegdan. The chapel we see today was completed in 1937. Originally, it was constructed in 15th century, when the relics of St. PEtka were moved to Belgrade (1417). Belgrade churches – in 1521 the relics were moved to Constantinople and in 1641 to Romanian city Jasi. The Chapel was designed by architect Momir Korunovic, while the interior is done by the painter Djuro Radulovic.
