The oldest house in Belgrade – Cultural monuments

The oldest house in Belgrade – The oldest house in Belgrade is in Dorcol in Cara Dusana 10 Street. It is protected by State since 1987. Owners changed over time, and today in the ground floor are a bakery and a glass store.

Between 1718 and 1739 Austrians were conquerors of Serbia and this building was built in the middle of this occupation, meaning that their cultural style – baroque greatly affected the construction which lasted three years 1724 to 1727, and the architect was Swiss Nikola Doksat de Mores.

In that time he was an engineer for the Austrian army, and his main task was renovation of the Kalemegdan town. Cultural monuments – Many mysteries and urban legends are attached to this house. Constructor of the house was executed for treason and one of the legend says that he was killed so he couldn’t reveal secret tunnels and hallway beneath the house, for which nobody knew where they lead.

Other sources claim that one end of the tunnel lead to the fortress and the other deep in the city. Other part of the mystery is related to German occupation in WW 2.

Germans were looking for something every day and one story says that here was buried the treasure which they dug out and took to Berlin. After the war the residents found tunnels beneath the house, but didn’t dare to explore them because of the walls that were on the verge of collapsing.

Cultural monuments – These legends will never be checked, because the tunnels are impossible to explore due to two facts: they are severely damaged and under water. Namely, after the Djerdap accumulation levels of Sava and Danube rose, so these underground passages got flooded.
