Princess Ljubica’s residence – magnificent historic and architectonic building

Princess Ljubica’s residence – in a magnificent historic and architectonic building in SIme Markovic 8 Street is the residence of Princess Ljubica.

Residence is in direct proximity of the St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Patriarchate and is protected as a monument of great significance as it is one of the rare houses from the first half of 19th century.

At the order of prince Milos Obrenovic, this residence was built between 1823 and 1831 for his family, princess Ljubica and sons Milan and Mihailo. The construction was given to Hadzi Nikola Zivkovic, official architect of the prince on pioneer of construction in Serbia.

The construction of the residence is also a historic transition for Belgrade – from Turkish province into a future modern capital. It was built in a Serbian-Balkan style impacted by western architecture – the classicism. The residence is in three levels – basement, ground and 1st floor, and the roof is covered in clinker.

Even though it was supposed to have the function of the official palace of the Dynasty, the prince Milos didn’t stay here as often due to Turks who were near – in Kalemegdan, Belgrade Museums – The residence often changed its purpose and it was used differently by state institutions. In 1980 due to its great historic and artistic value its official purpose was changed and it became a museum.

The constant exhibition will help visitors to learn more about the interior of housing in the old Belgrade, art and culture and the overall way of life back in the 19th century. Museums in Belgrade – and that is how the museum makes its travel back through time and enjoy the civil culture of the old Belgrade.

Visit to this museum is a unique experience, because the curator of the museum, wearing clothes of princess LJubica will welcome you and take you into the time of the Obrenovic Dynasty – walking you through the rooms of the residence arranged in Turkish, Balkan and European style.
