Marakana Stadium – the largest stadium in Serbia

Marakana Stadium – The Stadium “Rajko Mitic” belongs to FC Red Star from Belgrade, multiple champion of former Yugoslavia and Serbia and the European and world champion in 1991. Its popular name is “Marakana”.

It is the largest stadium in Serbia with official capacity of 55.538 seats, long 110 meters and 73 meters wide. It got its name after the first “Star of Red Star” legendary footbal player Rajko Mitic. Its construction lasted from 1960 to September 1, 1963 when was officially opened. Belgrade stadiums – Before Marakana, on this place used to be Stadium Yugoslavia, built in 1927.

FC Red Star has played many important games in different European cups. Largest number of visitors was on April 23, 1975 in the semi final game of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, against Hungarian club Ferencvaros.

A total of 96.070 tickets were sold but it is believed that 110.000 spectators were actually at the game. Score was 2:2 but to the finals went the Hungarian Club. Later on, due to safety reasons UEFA, the standing spots were cancelled during renovation – seats are on all four sides, and the stadium has the capacity of 55.538 seats.

Belgrade Stadiums – in Marakana was the finals of European Champions Cup between Ajax and Juventus, 1:0 in favour of Ajax, on April 330, 1979. 91.564 spectators attended the game.

Management of FC Red STar on December 21, 2014 brought the decision and renamed the stadium and gave it the name of the “first star of Red Star” Rajko Mitic, one of the greatest footbal players in Serbia of all times. Many music concerts were held in Marakan, among which the most visited were of Zdravko Colic (1978, 2001 and 2007) as well of the turbo folk singer Ceca in 2002.
